Anthropes
The Arokan People
Anthropes are the many sapient peoples of Aroka, descended from ancient ancestors whose origins are lost to myth. Though their forms vary — from upright beings with opposable thumbs to quadrupeds distinguished from their animal kin only by speech and intellect — all Anthropes share speech, reason, and the spark of spirit that sets them apart from the mundane beasts of the world. They are broadly divided into Kin, Folk, Bryd, and Beast, though the boundaries between these groups are shaped as much by culture as by blood.
KIN
The Elect
Kin are bipedal Anthropes with hands, thumbs, and the dexterity needed for crafting, writing, and complex labor. They resemble upright variants of their animal lineage, constructing clothes, shelter, and tools that allow them to rise above the base survival needs of their bestial and Folk counterparts. Kin often dominate urban and craft‑based societies, not necessarily because they are more intelligent, but because their morphology allows them to build and maintain the structures those societies require. While the beliefs about their origins vary, most myths involve the gods choosing the leaders among beasts to stand above the rest and build a world beyond the limitations of instinct and nature.
FOLK
The Talking Beasts
Folk resemble their mundane animal brethren in nearly every way except for sapience and speech. They walk, hunt, and live as their animal counterparts do, yet speak with the clarity and intelligence of any other person. Because Folk lack hands and opposable thumbs, they rarely form large nations or complex settlements. Most live in small communities or among their non‑sapient brethren, often serving as leaders, guides, or interpreters between instinct and intellect. In mixed settlements, Folk rely on Kin or hand‑capable Folk — such as Monkey‑Folk or Raccoon‑Folk — to craft clothing, tools, and shelter. This reliance has shaped many cultural hierarchies, though not always kindly.
BRYD
The Crossborn
Bryd are hybrids between two different types of Anthropes, not between Folk and Kin. They arise when two sapient peoples of different animal lineages conceive a child. These are rare due to the tendency for offspring to resemble only one parent, high rates of miscarriage in mixed pregnancies, health complications in blended offspring that survive birth, frequent sterility, and often strong social penalties for not fitting any one cultural niche. However there are reports of some Bryd being fertile, and small communities of them exist in scattered corners of the world. Their cultures are often unique, shaped by the tension between two heritages and the need to forge an identity neither parent lineage fully shares.
In exceedingly rare cases, a Bryd may be born of an Anthrope and a Dryn. Such births are dangerous, stigmatized, and often met with violence. Most Anthropes believe Dryn are what happens when a person loses their connection to nature and the world — a fall from grace so complete that they lose their claws, fur, scales, wings, speech, and reason. Thus, a Bryd of Dryn is seen as a sign of corruption or calamity. Those who survive often flee into the wilderness or find refuge among outcasts.
BEASTS
The Wildborn
Anthrope‑Beasts are the rare offspring of a Folk and a Kin of the same animal lineage. They are neither fully upright nor fully quadrupedal, often possessing a blend of traits from both parents. Their existence raises difficult ethical questions. While interbreeding is biologically possible across the entire spectrum — from mundane beast to Kin — it is often considered distasteful or perverse in most civilized lands. Those who live among and breed with their non‑sapient counterparts are viewed with suspicion or outright disgust. As a result, Anthrope‑Beasts are rare, and those who exist often live on the fringes of society.
